STEM at MBE: Curiosity in Action

At Mary Bergeron Elementary, we don’t just teach STEM — we live it. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, but at its core, it’s about problem-solving, creativity, and innovation. It’s how we empower students to explore the world, ask big questions, and design bold solutions.

STEM learning at MBE is hands-on, minds-on, and always rooted in curiosity and critical thinking. Whether students are building bridges out of straws, coding simple animations, experimenting with chemical reactions, or designing eco-friendly communities — they’re not just learning facts. They’re learning how to think.

What Does STEM Look Like at MBE?

In the Classroom:

  • Students explore STEM concepts through engaging, cross-curricular projects tied to real-world problems.

  • Activities might include coding robots, constructing marble runs, creating weather tools, or investigating how plants grow under different conditions.

  • Inquiry-based learning is at the heart of our approach — students learn to ask great questions, test their ideas, and revise their thinking like real scientists and engineers.

School-Wide Initiatives:

  • STEM Challenges & Theme Days: Think: Who can build the tallest tower using only index cards? Or: Can we create a chain reaction machine that rings a bell?

  • Maker Moments & Design Thinking Labs: Opportunities for students to invent, tinker, and prototype during open-ended learning sessions.

  • Guest Experts & Community Connections: Engineers, tradespeople, programmers, and more visit to share how STEM plays a role in their careers — helping students make real-world connections.

  • Green & Clean Energy Projects: Sustainability matters here. From recycling initiatives to solar-powered inventions, our students learn how STEM can help the planet, too.

Why STEM Matters

In a world that’s changing fast, STEM education prepares students not just to adapt, but to lead. It teaches them how to:

  • Solve problems creatively

  • Work collaboratively

  • Embrace failure as part of learning

  • Communicate their ideas effectively

  • Think critically and make evidence-based decisions

STEM is not just about getting ready for future jobs — it’s about empowering students to shape a better future, starting right now.

At MBE, STEM is Everywhere

From Grade 1 engineers to Grade 5 coders, MBE students are stretching their thinking, building with purpose, and discovering the thrill of "what if?" Our STEM approach helps every student see themselves as an inventor, a thinker, and a capable contributor to the world.

Because when kids are encouraged to explore, experiment, and engineer — there’s no limit to what they can build.
