Character Education

Woven Into Who We Are...

At Mary Bergeron Elementary, Character Education isn’t a class.
It’s not a worksheet or a once-a-week event.
It’s a way of being — woven into every hallway conversation, every recess conflict resolution, every shared success, and every mistake we grow from.

We believe that helping students become kind, respectful, responsible, and resilient people is just as important as academic success. That’s why character-building is embedded into everything we do — from how we speak to one another, to the opportunities students have to lead, serve, and shine.

Character & Leadership in Action at MBE

Here are just a few of the ways we build character and community:

  • M&M Assemblies

Our weekly Monday Morning Motivation assemblies bring the whole school together to celebrate positive behavior, share stories, celebrate birthdays, spotlight student leadership, enjoy student and staff performances, and learn more about character topics such as empathy, responsibility, and more. These assemblies set the tone and keep us all moving in the same direction — together.

  • We are a Bucket-Filling School

At MBE, we live by the philosophy that “filling someone else’s bucket fills your own.” Students learn that kind words and small actions can change someone’s day — and shape the culture of a school. Whether it’s peer recognition, classroom shout-outs, or quiet acts of kindness, bucket-filling is part of our daily language.

  • Kindness Warriors

Through our Kindness Warriors community service projects, each class in our school takes on real community service projects — helping others locally and globally. Whether it’s organizing donation drives, spending time with tour neighbors at Parkland Lodge, or pitching in to help out community members that need a hand up, our students learn that leadership begins with compassion and action.

  • Student Voice & Leadership

From classroom jobs to school-wide initiatives, students have real opportunities to lead. We nurture confidence and agency through collaborative decision-making, team projects, and authentic problem-solving, ensuring every child knows they can make a difference.

  • Daily Moments That Matter

Character isn’t only built on big projects — it’s shaped in small, consistent moments. At MBE, we model and coach respectful conflict resolution, celebrate effort, hold each other accountable, and lean into conversations about fairness, inclusion, and growth. We help students navigate the real world — not avoid it.

Character Education at MBE isn’t about adding more — it’s about making everything we already do more meaningful. We’re not just preparing kids for the next grade — we’re helping them become thoughtful, kind, and capable people who will make our world better.
