Indigenous Language & Culture at MBE: Honouring the Past, Empowering the Future

At Mary Bergeron Elementary, we are proud to walk a path of learning, listening, and living in respect for Indigenous language, culture, and history. We believe every student should have the opportunity to develop a meaningful connection to Indigenous ways of knowing — both as a foundation of this land and as a vital, living part of our community today.

Through story, song, language, art, land-based learning, and community connections, our students grow in their understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and worldviews — especially those of the Cree Peoples of Treaty 6 territory.

Language as Living Legacy

We strive to integrate Cree language into the everyday experiences of our students — greetings, songs, vocabulary, and classroom conversations — whenever and however we can. While we don’t have a full-time Cree language instructor, we are deeply grateful for the generosity of staff, elders, and community members who share their time and voice with us.

These opportunities are treasured and powerful. Language is not just communication — it carries stories, ceremony, identity, and spirit. Each word is a gift.

Community Partnerships That Lift Us

We are honoured to partner closely with the Edson Friendship Centre, whose support and guidance have opened doors to meaningful experiences for our students. From access to Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers, to traditional teachings and cultural celebrations, this partnership helps us weave Indigenous ways of learning throughout our school year.

Through this collaboration, our students have been able to:

  • Participate in seasonal celebrations and ceremonies
  • Learn about the significance of land, water, and animal kinship
  • Engage in traditional art, music, drumming, and dance
  • Explore Indigenous teachings of respect, humility, and gratitude

Learning That is Ongoing and Intentional

We approach Indigenous education with humility and responsibility. As a staff, we are committed to ongoing learning — recognizing that reconciliation is not a checkbox but a journey. We know the importance of creating safe, inclusive spaces where all students, especially Indigenous learners, see their identities and stories reflected in the life of the school.

Why This Matters

Understanding Indigenous histories, cultures, and perspectives helps students become more empathetic, informed, and grounded citizens. It builds bridges. It heals. It empowers future generations to live in truth and relationship.

At MBE, we don't just teach about Indigenous culture — we walk alongside it, with open minds and open hearts.

MBE Land Acknowledgement

Welcome to Mary Bergeron Elementary,
a welcoming place for people from around the world.
We wish to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is
Treaty 6 territory and is a traditional meeting ground, gathering place,
and home for many indigenous peoples - whose footsteps have
marked these lands for generations…
