Students playing ukulele

Music Program

The music program at Mary Bergeron Elementary is taught by a dedicated Music teacher, using a strong developmental approach. It combines music, movement, drama and speech into lessons. Students learn how to sing, move, play instruments, read/write music, listen and create music.

Music theory is intertwined into this approach. Students learn how to read, write and play rhythm patterns, read and play note names on a musical staff, understand and play appropriate dynamics and tempo in songs. Students also learn to keep a steady beat and respond to that beat through actions, body percussion and instruments.

Students are exposed to a variety of instruments including multiple percussion instruments (xylophones, glockenspiels, drums, shakers, guiros, sticks etc…) Students are also taught to play and demonstrate skills on the ukulele, recorders and handbells.

Students are also exposed to a multitude of multicultural songs and dance.

March is Music in our Schools Month!
